The Bascinet or hounds skull was the most popular helmet worn by the European warriors of the 14th and 15th century. The Bascinet was an evolution from the Cervelliere (a close fitting steel cap worn under the Great Helm).
The Bascinet was designed to lessen and redirect impacts to the face and head. The pointed nose and pointed helm would allow direct blows to be bounced off the helmet, as opposed to taking the full impact. The hinged visor gave the Knights more visibility as well as ventilation.
